THEORIES AND PROCESSES OF DEVELOPMENT

THEORIES OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Briefly outline the main elements of the following three theories:

    1. Environmental Determinism
    2. Rostow’s Development Theory
    3. The Vicious Cycle of Poverty
AID AND TRADE

Draw up a table as shown and complete the details in each of the columns: (use a whole page)

Type of Aid Definition & Example Outcome

RELIEF AID

VOLUNTARY AID

BILATERAL AID

MULTILATERAL AID

AID/TRADE CYCLES

Draw a diagram to show how the normal aid/trade cycle is meant to operate.

Why might aid actually harm some countries?

(Think of dependency, debt, ties, appropriateness and corruption)

How might aid benefit the recipient country in both the short term and the longer term?

ALTERNATIVE ROUTES TO DEVELOPMENT

Explain what you understand by each of the following as ways of helping countries to advance their economy/improve the well being of their populations:

    1. Loans
    2. Foreign Investment / Multinational Companies
    3. Tourism
    4. Resource Exploitation (valorisation /substitution)

Select one of the above and research an example to show the consequences of the scheme as far as the living conditions of the people are concerned. Was the scheme a success? Give reasons.

APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGY AND SELF HELP SCHEMES

Why have some Development ‘experts’ suggested that lower level development strategies are more appropriate for many countries of the Developing World?

What do you think?
